Apple has been making waves with its M-series chips, which power some of the best Macs and iPads on the market. But the company is not resting on its laurels, as it is already working on the next generation of its custom silicon: the M3.
The M3 chip is expected to be a significant upgrade over the M2 series, which currently offer impressive performance and efficiency in devices like the MacBook Air and the iPad Pro 12.9. The M3 chip will reportedly use TSMC’s advanced 3-nanometer technology, which will bring even more power and battery life improvements.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is developing multiple M3 chips, codenamed Ibiza, Lobos, and Palma. These chips will feature up to four dies, which would support up to 40 compute cores. That’s a huge leap from the 10-core CPUs found in the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips.

The M3 chip is expected to debut in 2023 Macs, starting with the 24-inch iMac. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says mass production on the chip will begin in the second half of 2023, so we could see M3 Macs late in the year.
The M3 chip will likely power other Mac models as well, such as the MacBook Pro and the Mac mini. It’s unclear if Apple will also use the M3 chip in its iPad lineup, or stick with the M2 series for now.
The M3 chip will be a major milestone for Apple, as it will further cement its lead in the PC market. The M-series chips have already proven to be faster and more efficient than Intel’s processors, and the M3 chip will widen that gap even more.
Apple’s transition to its own silicon has been a huge success so far, and the M3 chip will be another testament to that. We can’t wait to see what Apple has in store for us with its next-generation of Apple silicon.
