Oppo A78 4G Review – Budget Phone with a Purple Glow

The Oppo A78 4G is a new smartphone from the Chinese brand that offers a sleek design, a 50MP main camera, a large battery and a 90Hz display. It is a cheaper version of the Oppo A78 5G that was launched earlier this year in India. The Oppo A78 4G is aimed at the budget segment and competes with other devices such as the Redmi Note 10S, the Realme 8 and the Samsung Galaxy M32.

Design and Display

The Oppo A78 4G has a plastic body with a glossy finish that reflects light in different shades of purple. The back panel has a rectangular camera module that houses two cameras and an LED flash. The fingerprint scanner is integrated into the power button on the right side of the phone. The phone also has a 3.5mm headphone jack, a USB-C port and a speaker grille at the bottom.

The phone has a 6.56-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 720 x 1612 pixels and a 20:9 aspect ratio. The display supports a 90Hz refresh rate for smoother scrolling and gaming. The display also has Panda glass protection and a waterdrop notch for the selfie camera.

Performance and Software

The Oppo A78 4G is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 700 chipset, which is a 7nm octa-core processor with two Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.2GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2.0GHz. The phone also has a Mali-G57 MC2 GPU for graphics. The phone comes in two variants: 4GB RAM + 128GB storage and 8GB RAM + 128GB storage. The storage can be expanded via a microSD card slot.

The phone runs on Android 12 with ColorOS 13 on top. ColorOS 13 is a custom skin that offers various features such as dark mode, game space, smart sidebar, gesture navigation, privacy protection and more.

Camera and Battery

The Oppo A78 4G has a dual rear camera setup that consists of a 50MP primary sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and a 2MP depth sensor with an f/2.4 aperture. The main camera can capture detailed photos in daylight and decent shots in low light. The depth sensor helps in creating portrait shots with background blur. The camera also supports HDR, panorama, night mode, AI scene recognition and video recording up to 1080p at 30fps.

The front camera is an 8MP sensor with an f/2.0 aperture that can take selfies and make video calls. The front camera also supports HDR, AI beautification, face unlock and video recording up to 1080p at 30fps.

The phone has a large 5000mAh battery that can last for a day or more on moderate usage. The phone also supports 33W fast charging that can charge the battery from zero to 52% in 30 minutes and to full in 67 minutes.

Price and Availability

The Oppo A78 4G is available in two colors: Glowing Black and Glowing Purple. The phone is priced at about $230 for the base variant and $250 for the higher variant. The phone is available for purchase from OPPO’s online store, official e-commerce platforms and major telecom operators in Taiwan since March 17, 2023.

4GB +128GB$230
8GB +128GB$250

The Oppo A78 4G is a decent budget smartphone that offers a stylish design, a good camera, a large battery and a smooth display. However, it also has some drawbacks such as a low-resolution screen, an outdated processor, a mediocre selfie camera and no ultra-wide or macro lens. If you are looking for an affordable phone with a purple glow, you can consider the Oppo A78 4G. But if you want better performance, display quality and camera versatility, you may want to look elsewhere.
